Street Smart Obedience

K9 Kinship's obedience classes focus on the training philosophy that revolves around pack dynamics and canine leadership. Dogs follow direction because they have a competant leader who provides:

      • safety;
      • security; and,
      • satisfaction of such needs as food, exercise and mental stimulations.

By providing this leadership the dog understands its position in the pack and respects its leader- ‘the human guardian’.

The dog follows the fair and consistent leadership of their human guardian without the need of bribery (treats) or threats (corporal punishment).

We offer three Street Smart Obedience Level 1 dog training courses:

In the Street Smart Obedience Level 1 courses we begin with the basics of leadership training.

Our Level 2 course (Street Smart Obediance 2) builds on the obedience and leadership training taught in our Level 1 courses, and adds new commands and techniques such as:

      • stay-close (walking off leash within a certain distance from handler);
      • heeling on the opposite side and behind handler;
      • off leash heeling;
      • recall from distractions;
      • drop on recall;
      • down in heel; and,
      • come to heel are introduced in this class.

Our Level 3 obedience course (Street Smart Obediance 3) build on the Level 2 courses, however the Level 3 courses focus more on off leash training of your canine friend. Commands taught in Street Smarts Obedience Level 3 courses include:

      • commands at a distance;
      • come to heel;
      • drop in heel;
      • drop on recall;
      • run outs;
      • greeting in heel distraction training; and,
      • much more

Since our training is a lifestyle of working with your dog-rather than forcing it to comply with a series of exercises-each supporting class and level of training has to be completed in order, before moving to the next. This has been done so that students learn how to apply their training effectively in their daily life rather than teaching them a series of exercises then expecting them to know how to apply those exercises without guidance.

For example; Students participating in a level 3 obedience class can achieve a higher level of obedience from their dog because they have worked through all the previous levels to acquire the leadership and skills to gain a higher degree of control from their dogs by working together as a team. That is why we call it lifestyle of working with your dog.

In the past many students from other training facilities attempted to take a level 2 class or a level 3 without participating on our level 1 classes but have found that they simply don’t have the skills or leadership that our lifestyle students have. As a result they are often disappointed with their dogs performance.

Because of this we insist that all students start in a level 1 class, be it a basic, Intermediate or Advanced supporting class.

If you have come from another training facility you must be able to pass the Street Smarts Basic Level 1 Test [please refer to test sheet provided on this site] to proceed to any further level of training with us.

To take the test with one of our instructors a $45.00 (plus gst) fee applies. Our Instructors will then take about 1 hour of your time and test your level of canine learning theories, leadership and training and your dogs unbiased (no treats allowed) attention. If you are in-doubt about your dog’s ability please refer to the test sheet provided on this web site.
